George Clooney to Be Honored at Palm Springs Film Festival

George Clooney is getting an award, and no, it's not Sexiest Man Alive. He's already owned that like, twice.

The 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival plans to present the Academy Award-winning actor with their Chairman's Award. The honor is a prestigious one, and Clooney is getting it for his work in The Descendants and The Ides of March.

Presented by Cartier, the Film Festival's Awards Gala will take place Saturday, January 7, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner praised the actor in a statement, saying:

"George Clooney brings new definition to the word 'star'. A consummate actor, director, producer and screenwriter, he’s demonstrated that no discipline within the film industry is beyond his reach."

Indeed, Clooney is a triple threat in the film world. He acts in, directs and produces his own films, and also, he's really hot. Matzner continues:

"In The Ides of March as an actor, director, producer and screenwriter, Clooney exposes the gritty world of political campaigns where winning is the only option, no matter how devastating the consequences. In The Descendants, he gives a bravura performance as a reluctant patriarch, living in a Hawaiian paradise, who is thrust into making life and death decisions affecting his entire family. To this star of many talents, whose career, fortunately for all of us who admire him, is still a work in progress, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present the 2011 Chairman’s Award to George Clooney.”

If acting, directing and producing aren't enough, Clooney actually also wrote the screenplay for Ides of March, along with writers Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon. Past recipients of the prestigious Chairman's Award are Ben Affleck, Dustin Hoffman, and Nicole Kidman.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival is one of the biggest festivals in the country. About 130,000 guests attend each year. It's also known for its annual Black Tie Awards Gala. So you know what that means—we get to see George Clooney in a tux again! Other actors awarded by the Festival are Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Bridges, Danny Boyle, Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, Colin Firth, Ron Howard, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman and Kate Winslet.

The Descendants is currently out in theaters. It stars Clooney, whose character's wife has been involved in a boating accident that leaves her in a coma.
