I don’t know where he’s going with this one either.
By now you know that Clooney and his Dad Nick Clooney were arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy last week. Now for that "I'm just like Liz Taylor" bit.
Clooney remembered back when his dad was a journalist and many of his dad’s news stories were ignored for celebrity news about Liz Taylor. Now, Clooney thinks that HE is the new Liz Taylor and hopes that using his celebrity leverage he and his dad could bring real attention to what’s happening in Darfur. Got it?
Clooney told Fox News, “I saw my father in the 1970’s doing really good stories and then getting bumped because there was a Liz Taylor story that was going to be out. And then story that he did had some real social value and was going to be bumped.”
“I said to my dad, ‘Remember how you used to get all your stories bumped by Liz Taylor or something happening in Hollywood?’ and he said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Well, let’s go to Darfur. And you be the newsman and I’ll be Liz Taylor and let’s get it on the air.’ And he said, ‘Ok.’”
And that’s how celebrities save the world, y’all.
However, Clooney may have only been in Sudanese prison for a day, but he shared some other close calls from visits to the country.
Clooney retells a story of how a local man once showed Clooney an unexploded bomb, “Well, the bomb one was funny because the guy said, 'You want to see?' And we're standing on top of this bush, he pulls back the bush, and there was a bomb. Oh, there's a bomb,” says Clooney, "And so he kept messing with the bush and I thought, ‘maybe don't hit it with the stick too many times, you know?’ So, we were glad to get out of there."
I love the way Clooney tells a story, it walks a fine line between totally serious and almost a prank.
