The premise for Fran Drescher’s new show, Happily Divorced, is based on a real-life experience of her husband leaving her after coming out of the closet.
"He had already been living a gay life away from me after we divorced,” she says.
So Fran’s role in the show is closely based on herself. And coincidentally, her character has a super annoying voice, too.
Drescher says that her then-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, broke the news to her by saying, “I don’t want you to be shocked. I’m dating men.”
Which is probably the most shocking way you can announce that news. I mean, if someone says to me, “I don’t want you to be shocked,”
I figure the next thing they’re going to say is there’s a spider on me or something, Not that my whole life has been a lie. Maybe try saying, “I don’t want you to be shocked. But one of us has been dating other men. And if you’ve been dating other men, then two of us have been dating other men.”
But in truth, the news didn’t come as that much of a surprise to Drescher.
“During our marriage he had told me he might be bisexual, but he wanted to stay married," she says. "By the time he told me, I had survived uterine cancer. Nothing could shake me."
So when do we get to the part where these two become besties?
“It's great that we had the ability and the wisdom to reinvent our relationship,” Fran explains. “All those years weren't for nothing. We're very tight. We're best friends."
