Fergie's $4 Million Dollar Deal

July 03, 2007

Fergalicious Ferg is about to bank some millions. Fergie has just made a deal with Candie’s for $4 million to sing about the brand. The songs are supposedly going to be on her second solo album, but so far no word on the release date of that or if it’s even in the works.

An executive at Fergie’s record label Interscope said:

“With record sales in decline, you must find novel ways to make money out of the music. The trick is to make the brand part of the song so that it slips down easily rather than chokes the fan. Candie’s will reach teens, but it has no say over exactly what Fergie will sing, or when. Fans might think she is just singing about candy. But it’s got to work in the song. Fergie does not sing jingles.”

$4 million is a pretty generous amount considering “record sales are in decline,” and that she probably won’t even write the song herself.

"Fergie does not sing jingles." Umm ... that's exactly what she'll be doing, Mr. Interscope Executive.

I guess her work should be ignored by any serious music journalist or reviewer. She has declared herself a pitchperson for consumer products. The argument that the money is needed to make music is ridiculous, since lots of great albums are made without spending a bundle. There are fantastic jazz albums out there, for instance, and I'll bet Neil Young didn't spend much on his last album. But then, these are real artists.
