Elton John Is For Prop 8

This confuses us! Sir Elton John has come forward saying he’s for Proposition 8, which bans gay marriages. He believes gay couples should stick to civil unions rather than getting married.

Elton and his longtime partner David Furnish celebrated a civil union ceremony back in 2005. At the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NYC on Monday night, he said, “We’re not married. Let’s get that right. We have a civil partnership. I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

We have to say, we didn’t expect this from him! We figured the point is to be treated equally as citizens of this country. Do you agree with Elton’s statement?

That answer depends on where you are. If you are in the United Kingdom, the answer is yes. If you have a civil partnership/union/registry/whatever elsewhere, it is going to vary. THAT is a real problem. Especially in the States - even if you formulate a law in a state that gives exactly what marriage does, and it is enforced, you are still missing some pretty important things like all the Federal benefits - which aren't affected by this state law. Immigration, social security spousal benefits & taxes come to mind, as well as many others.

You really have the same rights in a civil partnership as you would in a marriage?

Although i voted no on prop 8, I actually think Elton John has a good point, marriage had been known to be between a man and a woman for so long it may be hard for some people to change that mentality. So why not do a civil partnership? It gives you the same rights as a regular marriage and the same happens to you when you divorce

if gay marriage is prohibited, then civil partnership should have same rights as marriage, but be called civil partnership... besides, who wants to get married anyway?

Gevo doesn't seem to know that he'll still lose his stuff anyway in the legal proceedings following a breakup of a civil partnership.

Smart guy, he knows if he gets married and divorces he will lose half his stuff.

Elton can be refreshing and sometimes funny with his bluntness, but other times like now, it's actually aggravating because he doesn't know what he's talking about and does more harm than good. First of all he's totally ignoring the fact that the U.S.'s northern neighbors, and his partner's home country - did pass nationwide gay marriage. Five years ago. He could have opted for that as a symbolic gesture prior to England's passing the civil partnership, but he obviously felt no need to. Good for him, but some of us actually have problems in dealing with everyday things because of the inequalities in treatment of gay couples and we don't have the resources and contacts that he does. A marriage license from Canada would actually help us in certain places and scenarios - but he didn't need that. We do. He also is probably unaware that there are problems with having separate-but-equal scenarios in terms of civil partnerships/unions vs marriage - it's already been happening in places like New Jersey - and the governor has recognized that businesses are choosing not to be equal and playing the semantics game so he is going to try to address that in 2009. Again, good for Elton for not having any problems like that in his own world. Where idiots and bigots can discriminate - they will. It's a bit like having a rat in a cage - they will find the weak spot and gnaw at it. Sometimes they are just plain uncreative and lazy, & they don't even try to make it equal because no one is forcing them to.
