Prop 8 Passes in California

November 05, 2008

Despite all the celebrity endorsements Prop 8 got, the controversial proposition, which will ban same sex marriages, passed by just over 52 percent.

Everyone from Ellen, Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger opposed the proposition, but their celebrity pull wasn't enough.

Speaking about Prop 8, Ellen Degeneres, who wed Portia de Rossi back in August, joked "I can't return the wedding gifts. I love my new toaster."

What were your thoughts on Prop 8? Are you disappointed with the outcome?

That America is a Christian nation is a point of debate. It's not the established fact that you seem to think it is. You may be right, given the current culture, and the way the country is behaving right now. But it need not be in the future. The founding history of America is not the same as its current living, breathing, growing, shifting population making history right now. Maybe it's just the change you can't face. And even if you wanted to stick to the founding history, that America is a Christian nation is not obvious. For example: * In God We Trust” and “one nation under god” were added to the currency and the pledge only recently — in the 1950s. And by the way, it's "in God we trust", not in a Christian God, so it does not have to be in support of any one religion. * The treaty of Tripoli, signed by Pres. John Adams and ratified by the Senate says: “… the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion …” * God and/or Jesus are mentioned zero times in the Constitution. But don't take my word for it. Go look it up yourself. I don't really care what conclusions you come to, but the point I made was pertinent, so please don't be rude and call me dumb. It doesn't reflect on you very well.

You guys are obvioulsy radicals in this case. I never said I wanted them dead. Read my first comment, I said that I have nothing against the gay community. Please stop being so rude to me. Believe me, if I wanted to be rude, I can be much more rude than you guys!

Jana - and then they would say that they were doing God a "favor" by getting rid of those pesky homos...they would think that was rational!
9:51AM 11/06/08 Jana
Hey...hhhh...I have an idea...why not take all the rights from the homosexual community, even the right to breathe.... hhmmm...why don't we round up all the fag & dyke & trannies & give you the honor of shooting them one by one...I bet U'd LOOOVE that...

First of all, learn, you must be really dumb. Our country is a christian nation. "In God We Trust", "One nation, under God" Secondly,melbug07, of course it affects me.One day, I don't want my children to be confused when they step out of the house or even on TV. In my culture and religion, being homosexual is completely wrong.
5:19AM 11/06/08 melbug07
All I can say is how does a gay couple marrying personally affect YOU? It doesn't...end of story. Homosexuals do not taint our society. I feel blessed that I can live in a world that is so diverse. There will come a day though when they finally get their chance...just like with abortion (no amount of "Christians" can ever take that away either!). I'll keep praying for them until then. Hallelujah! Amen! Pass the plate!
4:29AM 11/06/08 learn
A Christian nation? Wow, that is news to me. Coulda sworn you're secular. (I guess that's the real problem here.)

A similar one passed here in FLorida and Im sick about it. There are already 8 laws on the books against gays marrying but this one protected the union between and "a man and a woman"? Floridians just screwed themselves but not being educated enough to understand that they just gave government CONTROL! GO BIG BROTHER...YOU SUCK!
10:06PM 11/05/08 hhhh
Thank god!!!!!!!!!! How can a christian nation accept such blasphemy?! I am so glad that Prop 8 passed. I have nothing against the gay community, but they shouldn't be given the right to marry! I also don't appreciate the "No on Prop 8" supporters being so rude to the supporters of Prop 8. Everyone has their own opinion!

I'm sorry that you are criticizing us "bible" thumpers, while you are being soooo good by spitting in our faces for upholding our traditions. Here is my other cheek if you would like to spit on it too. And whoever said the 13th and 14th century garbage...I mean come on. I didn't say that a "family" WAS a man and a women, but I meant to imply that ONLY a man and a women together can CREATE a family. As a medical student I'm pretty sure that two women or two men cannot create children. You and your daughter ARE a family--I'm sure a great one. I'm sorry that you feel like all marriages end in divorce; that is not true in my case or in the case of a lot of couples. Marriage between a man and a women in a religious sense is important and sacred. Don't touch it. Marriage between men and women even in a non-religious sense is VITAL to the functioning of society. This isn't a civil rights act---we aren't denying these people their rights. They have just as many rights as we do. I have gay friends, I don't love them any less. They are not being discriminated against. I close my case.

How can they give something and then take it away?? That was just WRONG...

melbug07 trying to spit on me is like pissing in the rain, youd only do damage to yourself. im immune to your ignorance. and people like me do exist in america or else we wouldn't have won! anyways you call yourself a christian? thats crazy. and my eyes are wide open or else id think like you. and i for one never tried to define "family."nor did insult anyone. i am only stating my beliefs about marriage. and no i have never harrased a homosexual. and if you read the whole post youd see that i have a cousin that is gay whom i love dearly. it's just we have different oppinions. i have asked him if him being molested as a child caused his homosexuality. he says no. i believe otherwise. but rest assured or not i don't care what you think lol i do love him. so your wrong there too. and it's really funny that you say the bible is not written by god himself and then make a quote "GOD dont like ugly" your retarded. and i stake my life on it that your statement is less likely true than what is in the bible. excuse me for having morals and wanting to conserve that which brought about many fruits to our nation. and it does affect me because im married and i for one did it the right way. i believe that marriage is a union and that me and my wife are one. why do you and other people feel the need to impede or trash my values. Registerd domestic partners have all the right that married couples have. and yea many do get a divorce and thats because many marriages are not blessed. many marry just to have a paper or rights not the sacred union. see i can handle people not doing it right but i draw the line at people trying to change it. you see the difference? doint it wrong and straight out changing it's meaning. and i don't have to insult you to get this point across
1:40PM 11/05/08 melbug07
I can't believe some of what I just read. I didn't think people like this still existed in America. Since when is a "family" defined as a man and a woman? I guess being a single mother - my daughter and I aren't really a "family" by your definition? Wow...that's some scary thinking! And if you're going to get all religous about it - GOD BLESS you all for being such a "great" Christian who lives vicariously through the words of Christ Almighty. Let us not forget that the marriages that do occur today between MAN and WOMAN more often than less end in divorce. I guess all of these people lack morality too because that is against what "the Bible says." Open up YOUR eyes - the Bible wasn't written by Christ himself. It was written to give us a basis on how to live. It is not to be taken literal. I am a Christian - and I don't believe that God would create a person that didn't deserve the same rights as anyone else (ie gays, blacks, etc.) No one chooses to be a certain color or sexual orientation. It is what we are given. You are happy being an arrogant, Bible thumper - let someone be a happy, gay individual. And as a side note, just because gays aren't being "harassed" anymore, doesn't make their life any greater. It shouldn't have been happening in the first place. If I ever saw you, I'd spit in your face for even saying such a thing. You're probably one of those people that WOULD abuse and harass a homosexual. And like I've always been taught, "God don't like UGLY!" And that's exactly how you are acting!
1:29PM 11/05/08 Gina
In a democracy everyone is entitled to their beliefs. The bottom line is that people in California, are not ready for total acceptance of gay marriges and still want to keep their religous values when it comes to marriges and conventional families. They are not ready to give homosexuality the stamp of approval, although it is increasingly tolerated. As a democracy, California is just not ready to accept an increasingly homosexual society. I know that this may seem like equal but seperate laws, where marrige is defined as man and woman and equal is a civil union to a homosexual couple. Unfortunatly, marrige is seen as a historically religous sacrament. One true issue also, is that homosexual partners do influence their children and often create gender confusion for their children. So their will be more gay and bisexual people. Ask someone who has gay parents. So by allowing same sex marriges we are asking the rest of the state to accept an increased amount of gay peeps as well as increased acceptance of homosexuality in the next generation. And apperantly the people are not ready for this.

I think it is absolutely shameful that the over righteous Christians conservatives care who people marry. Maybe they should go back to their bibles and read it, what happen to thou shall not pass judgment on others? If gay couples can’t marry, than interracial couples shouldn’t be allowed to get married. Sorry if you are going to eliminate the rights of one group, then why not eliminate the rights of everyone who isn’t a white Christian? Being the most liberal state the in union we sure have a lot of hypocrites, who want to keep things the way they were? If it ain’t broken don’t fix it!?!?! Being gay is not a crime, and neither is being a married gay person. Why does it affect you? Yes, because you have been brainwashed your entire life to believe only one thing, but really stop and think about it, how does it affect you? More homosexual couples are stronger because of the discriminations they have had to endure, versus some heterosexual couples. I am a teacher and nothing in my curriculum requires me to teach ANYTHING!!!!! About marriage!!!! Maybe you uneducated people should take a history class, because in the 13th and 14th centuries men were only allowed to love and marry their equals, and since women weren’t considered equals, men were only allowed to marry men, and have sex with other men. Really you dense bible thumping hypocrites, why don’t you just mind your business, they aren’t trying to convert you to homosexuality they just want to live their lives, just like you live your lives. This issue isn’t about gay rights, or straight rights it is about human rights!!!! And Californians are obviously anti- human rights!!!! I’m having t-shirts made up. This entire thing is about HUMAN RIGHTS!!!! Not gay rights, gays are humans too and maybe you should really take some time to really think about your values and how you are pushing them onto other people. I have heard so many people say that gay people bring that stuff into my house, well all of the BS “Yes on Prop 8” commercials are coming into my house. Who cares about who people marry as long as they work and pay taxes, then who cares what they do. If you are going to eliminate the rights of gays, then blacks, asians, mexicans, anyone who isn't white should have their rights stripped away as well. And to whoever said they have the same rights, they don't if a lesbian couple has a child and the biological mother dies, the other mother has no right to that child, thanks you the close minded jack asses of California!!!!!! Only whites should have rights, should only be allowed to vote, have driver's licenses, be allowed to go to the doctor, get an education. Are any of you aware that we just elected a BLACK PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please educate yourself on HUMAN rights, and take a freakin' history class!!!!

YES ON 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES. as to the comments that we should be ashamed of ourselves and that this is 2008 not 1908 i have this to say. first im not at all ashamed but proud and very happy to see that there are still many people in california that have some bit of morality left. and no we are not closed minded maybe the supporters of "NO" are the ones that are closed minded, and let me explaine why. i see many interviews and one of the things that gets left out alot is this. Marriage is a UNION between man, woman, and GOD period. that is the purpose of marriage. a man and a woman join and become one under GOD. and GOD does not join MAN AND MAN.(he will love them and show grace to them at his discretion, but will not join them.if im wrong show me in the bible where it says this) and yes marriage has gone through alot of changes and its traditional value has decreased some, but at least we have drawn the line. and like harry used to say the buck stops here. as to the argument that we are discriminating against gays- i ask what and in what way? REGISTERD DOMESTIC PARTNERS have the same rights as married couples do numbnuts. there is no discrimination as to the rights that they are entitled to as opposed to a married couple. once again for you ignoramaces (if thats a word.LOL) REGISTERED DOMESTIC PARTNERS have the same rights as married couples do. NOW!why in the current state that we live in do the gays want to invade our values and traditions? why do the gays want to redifine what marriage has been for thousands of years? i'll tell you why to destroy and continue to destroy christian moral values. face the truth we are at war folks like it or not. (and let me add i have a cousin thats gay, i love him anyways but he don't talk to me because of my opinions and feelings, oh well his loss, i try and be civil... anyways) why don't we allow homosexuals to have a title as married. WELL! because once again mariage is between a MAN and a WOMAN and MOST IMPORTANTLY GOD.its a trinity folks. he is what makes the couple into one. without god in the picture there is no union it can't happen. this is the basis and foundation of a true marriage as it was created.it is also a symbol of his and our relationship. his is our groom and is making a home for us and we are wife. (i forget what passage that is) and yes many have made a mockery, and yes many get into marriage with not that mentality, and yes not all are aware of the trinity, but it is the way it was made to be. but i do say this aswell married couples that go into the marriage with the concept of the trinity as it's supposed to be generally last longer. to rap it up folks. YES ON 8 Cali good job!!!!! and to the people who call us closed minded, strattle this in your noodles. why must i redifine something that i hold sacred, because you feel like it? why is it that a tradition that i love, and has been passed down for countless generations, needs to be changed because you say so? WHY do gays insist on marriage when they already have the same rights? why are you trying to destroy christian values? WHY? you hav RDP'reship. your not beat up anymore? or harrased? or discriminated? WHY must you insist on trying to vacate GOD? whos the closed minded NOW?
11:33AM 11/05/08 jjsp
I am not a California resident, but I am very glad that this act passed. Marriage is and must be defined as the marriage between one man and one women. All those who do not understand this do not understand the fundamentals of society. If this had not passed who is to say what marriage is then? If marriage can be between any combination of sexes, who is to say that marriages can't be between 3 and 5 people? Why only two, if you are going to extrapolate marriage? I support the constitution in upholding and honoring the rights of all people, give them their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness--but if they choose to not participate in traditional marriage that is their decision. Call their unions whatever you please, give them tax benefits, but do not compromise the fundamental, basic, and essential unit of society which is the FAMILY. And families start with strong marriages between one man and one woman. And to all those who follow "celebrities" and carry their opinions only because they are on tv--I hope the future of our nation does not fall into your hands. Think for yourself!

Bill Clinton signed the "Defense Of Marriage Act" because he did not think gay marriage was workable, or good policy. Politically, he prevented a war within teh Democratic party between homosexuals and trial lawyers (who handle a lot of divorce cases). Glad to have played a role in the win for PEROP 8 proponents.
11:00AM 11/05/08 Sophie
anyone who voted YES should be ashamed of themselves
9:33AM 11/05/08 shutup
Its tragic that in 2008 people are still closed minded and feel the need to have laws such as this everyone should be able to marry whomever they love not who the law allows them to
8:37AM 11/05/08 melbug07
I'm very disappointed with the outcome. At this point, this shouldn't even be an issue anymore. This is 2008 - not 1908. I hope that one day soon the public/government can overcome their ridiculous views and see that marriage can be between ANY two people. I'm sure this will always be an issue (like abortion), but this is America and we are holding people back from fulfilling their dreams - something that living in the US is supposed to provide.
8:32AM 11/05/08 LongIslandMa
awful. absolutely sick that this would pass. people should be ashamed of themselves for voting yes
