Elizabeth Hurley Faces Jail Time?

Elizabeth Hurley and her new husband Arun Nayar could be facing jail time after being accused of breaking Hindu customs during their wedding ceremony.

According to reports, Arun's father Vinod, who was upset about how he was treated during the wedding, is willing to testify against the couple with written evidence. Isn't that sad that his own father is trying to put the couple behind bars? Isn't he taking into consideration that fact that she has a little kid? Is he gonna take care of him?

Some of the complaints against them include: Hurley refused to remove her shoes inside the marriage mandrap (marriage place) and that the couple drank alcohol before the wedding.

The Daily Mail claims that the couple have been charged with an intention to outrage the feelings of Hindus by insulting their religious and ritualistic beliefs under section 295 A of the Indian Penal code.

Those found guilty of deliberately insulting the Hindu religion can face a three-year prison sentence.

"An arrest warrant could be issued for Arun and Liz as soon as the prosecution has made its case – either because they are summonsed to give evidence or they have been found guilty," prosecuting lawyer HM Saraswat said in comments reported by the paper.

Well, if there's one thing we can always count on, it's religious intolerance, bigotry, and ignorance. That father has a lot of nerve causing a stink over this drivel when his compatriots defecate in the streets and scavenge gold fillings from the teeth of smoldering cadavers at the banks of the Ganges. What priorities: Who CARES that the couple sat on a sofa instead of on the floor? India allows its people to rot while still alive in the most ghastly inferno of human misery I've ever seen. THAT should be punishable with jailtime.

To all the people above who are obviously living in their own ignorant world, and have no clue what India is as a country. India is the second fastest growing economy in the world. And the only answer I have about the customs in India, there is respect and love in families unlike western cultures where father’s don't want to support their unborn kids and girls have to get DNA tested to find the father.....Indians are better off than that !

I completely agree w/ Nancy except in the part of Western cultures. I am from Mexico and we too have respect for family. I think it's more of a U.S. culture or lack thereof where people have no respect for anything. It's no coincidence that most of the world hates the U.S.

I personally know Vinod Nayar and his wife and while I do not know Joanna that well I can tell you that Vinod is a great guy and usually a lot of fun. I will speak to him in time about this but I suspect that this has more to do with a lack of respect than anything else.

I BLAME HER HUSBAND, HE SHOULD KNOW HIS LAWS AND HIS CUTOMS. YET HE ALLOWED HER TO FOLLOW HER WANTS, INSPITE OF THIER LAWS AND HE SHOULD GO TO JAIL NOT HER. WHY DID THEY GET MARREID THERE ANYWAY?

To all of you who think economic development is equivalent of mental-social development! hello??? Wake up people!! It does not work that way! I am an indian, and though I am proud of my heritage and origin, I have to admit that indians are the largest community of racists, backward thinkers, hypocrites, and bigots! This is a country where majority of men still control and decide the life of their wives and daughters! And for those women who think that its okay to live that kind of controlled life, my sincerest sympathies for the lack of courage in your hearts to realise your own worth. Regarding the issue of "caring husbands and fathers"... the indian family system only works because arranged marriages enforces loyalty. Women adjust and compromise to all kinds of nuisance and unfairness from their husbands just to keep the family together. That does not mean that the indian fathers are the most involved fathers. In Indian homes, the women are always by default expected to take care of the children, besides going to work, earning lots of money, and washing dishes and cooking food! While the indian men fart and watch cricket most of their available time! It is a shame that courts and socially-mentally retarted bunch of indians have brought so much unnecessary trouble in a couple's happiest moment! Ridiculous!!

Also... let me add that it is painfully sad that India has become nothing like the free and well balanced India Mahatma Gandhi dreamed of! Economic development does not mean that the soul of the country is as free and enlightened as it should be! I wonder why Gandhi fought so hard, just to have the very evils he despised of re-grow and weaken the soul of the once great ancient civilization! But one cannot live in past glories. One needs to open eyes to the reality of today. Frustrating!!!
