Sherman Hemsley, the actor who played the character George Jefferson most famously on “The Jeffersons” has died at his El Paso, Texas home.
It’s unclear how the actor died. He was not married, nor did he have any children.
Hemsley, who was 74, first became a household name during his appearances on “All in the Family” as George Jefferson and then went onto star on the spin-off show “The Jeffersons.”
Hemsley had a prolific career, also starring in the TV show “Amen,” voiced one of the characters on “Dinosaurs” and even made some appearances on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Sister, Sister.”
He even appeared on the 6th season of “The Surreal Life.”
His last job was playing the George Jefferson role again during an episode of Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne.”
Hemsley was also a professional singer who released the single “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head” in 1989.
UPDATE: In a statement to Hollyscoop, Tyler Perry says of Hemsley's passing, “I had the pleasure of working with him on House Of Payne. He brought laughter and joy to millions. My childhood would have been a lot sadder without him. Thanks for the joy, thanks for your talent, and thanks for your life. I celebrate it in all of its beauty. God Bless you Mr. Hemsley.”
Sally Struthers tells Hollyscoop, "Oh no, I loved him alot. He was one of the good guys. Gone too soon"
