New details are starting to emerge surrounding the extortion plot against David Letterman, and they're not pretty!

It turns out the man behind the plot is an Emmy award winning producer at CBS, the same network that David Letterman's Late Show is on.

Robert "Joe" Halderman, who worked on the news program 48 Hours, was arrested Thursday outside the CBS News Broadcast center in New York.

He's being charged with Grand Larceny in the first degree could face up to 22 years behind bars, reports Us Weekly.

Three weeks before his arrest, Joe left Letterman a package with a letter that read, "I know that you do some terrible, terrible things and that I can prove you do some terrible things."

Letterman confessed that the "terrible things" he was talking about were a string of affairs with females he worked with.

"I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family," said Letterman. "I felt menaced by this, and I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done.

"The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show," he went on. "My response to that is yes, I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Yes, it would, especially for the women."

He quickly notified the District Attorney's office and they advised him to send Joe the $2 million dollar check he asked for. And three weeks later Joe is behind bars and facing 22 years in jail.

We're getting new details surrounding this extortion plot by the hour, so stay tuned, but in the meanwhile check out the clip of him telling his audience about his affairs...

He asked for a CHECK and didn't think he would get caught?!? What a MORON! New York is where the Letterman Show is produced...NOT Hollywood!

An Emmy-award producer ? What a douche. "You'll never work in THIS business again" is an understatement. I guess some people just don't give a shit about their careers, or their family & friends. Some people would (and HAVE) do anything to work in the entertainment biz-TV, film, music. To get paid to do something you love ? And win an award for it? He was probably ALREADY making decent money. I hope this guy goes straight to jail.

On boy..it's seems that nothing should surprise anyone anymore, but this story surprised me. Is any man truly faithful and for someone to try to collect money from it is truly despicable.
