Our husband David Beckham admitted in an exclusive Daily Mirror interview that he was physically sick after his coach made the announcement of him resigning as captain of his team.
He knew it was coming because he had already decided to quit the captaincy six months earlier; however he admits that he was emotionally unprepared for the ordeal.
"Resigning the captaincy was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do," said Beckham. "I was sitting in the hotel beforehand knowing that I was about to do it and absolutely dreading it.
"I talked it through with Victoria. I think people saw how emotional I was. I was hurting because I had been captain for six years.
"In my eyes at least I had been successful. It took me about six weeks to get over that press conference. I had decided six months earlier to quit but it got to me so much, I was physically sick afterwards.
"When I got back to the room, Victoria tried to console me but I was so upset I was sick. I had decided around Christmas that whatever happened in the World Cup, I would quit as captain. If we'd gone all the way and won the tournament, then it would have been an incredible end to my captaincy.
"I didn't want to walk away from my country but I just felt it was the right time for someone else to take over. Victoria said to me that the decision had to come from me.
"I could have come out and said I was going to resign six months before the World Cup but I didn't want all the hype about 'who's going to be the next captain' and questions about whether I was focused enough to play.
"I had to get it into my head that this was the moment but it didn't matter how much I steeled myself, I still found it difficult to cope with the reality."
