Beckham Trades Futbol for Football

June 25, 2007

Is David Beckham giving up his kicks for some tackle? Not really, although it looks like Beckham is making his move to America and to “American football”. Last month, David Beckham and Reggie Bush met in Madrid to help bridge the gap between futbol and football. Beckham's highly anticipated move to the U.S. to play field is literally right around the corner.

'Adidas' brought the soccer ace and the New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush together for a training session unlike any other. The two athletes dressed in opposite uniforms and challenged each other to their respective sports -attempting penalty kicks, pass routes and field goals.

So how is Beckham preparing for his big debut? He told Reggie, "Since I signed with the Galaxy, you know every time I do an interview, I'm trying to get myself to say soccer because I've always said football." As long as he's "Bending it Like Beckham" he can call it anything he wants.

I hope Bex was hinting that his sport is the real football when he told Reggie he's used to calling it football. I think it was disrespect on adidas's part to not call Beckham's sport football. I just hope America falls in line soon, just as Australia has, and starts calling the beautiful game by its proper name, football.

Re: Hi's comment. You make a very good point as the brits did invent the term soccer. However it does seem odd the the american code of football involves little or no foot-ball contact. But diff country diff code.

The British invented "football", the soccer version that is. And they also invented the term "soccer" too. Soccer is not an American term. There were two types of footballs in England, Rugby Football and Association Football. To differentiate between the two, the terms "Ruggers" and "Soccer" were used. "Futbol vs Football" is just an advertisement slogan by Adidas. And Adidas is a German company. So don't blame the Americans.
6:10AM 06/26/07 Hi
Why are you calling it a Futbol? (Isn't that the turkish term?) It's called a Football, and yours is called an American Football. Seeing as the largest sport in the world, Football, is actually played with your feet instead of your hands. If 99% of the world is calling it football and your sport American Football, is it really that hard to step in line? Calling football, Soccer is aobut as logical as you starting calling Nascar, Formula-1.
