There are a lot of celebs who make their drug and alcohol problems public. Sometimes, very public (cough* Charlie Sheen *cough). We're all morbidly intrigued with stars like Lindsay Lohan and Mel Gibson, who gradually become drugged-up messes in the middle of a meltdown.
Sometimes these celebs get over their issues, and sometimes they show up to a red carpet event with rotting teeth.
Other celebrities work hard to keep their addictions in check. They quietly enter rehab, quietly recover, and then get right back into the spotlight. Here are some celebs we didn't know were recovering addicts.
Daniel Radcliffe: When the Harry Potter star recently revealed his sobriety, we had no idea he'd had a problem. "I became so reliant on alcohol to enjoy stuff," he said. "There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me."
Demi Moore: Perhaps because she's cleaned up her act so well, not everyone is familiar with Moore's drug addict past. She had a cocaine addiction back in the 80s. Go figure. But she sobered up when the director of St. Elmo's Fire threatened to fire her.
Ben Affleck: In 2001, Ben Affleck had a wild gambling trip to Vegas, where he drank so much, that he drove straight to rehab.
Affleck said he realized he was "just one bad night away from a big 'E! True Hollywood Story."
Kelly Preston: This was the same woman who once dated Charlie Sheen, so it's not really that surprising. But before she converted to Scientology, Kelly Preston used and abused marijuana, Quaalude, Ecstasy and cocaine. Luckily, Kelly battled her demons before she rose to fame, so she's not known for her tumultuous past.
Jamie Lee Curtis: She's awesome in those Activia commercials, but Jamie Lee says one of her biggest accomplishments is overcoming her painkiller addiction.
Cory Montieth: You know that troubled kid in your family who stole money from your aunt to buy drugs? Okay, maybe that's not every family. But that was Cory Monteith. The Glee star did "anything and everything, as much as possible," he says. "I'm lucky on so many counts—I'm lucky to be alive." He entered rehab at 19, but didn’t quite get over his addictions until he got caught stealing money from a family member. "I was done fighting myself," the actor said.
Eva Mendes: In 2008, Eva made headlines when she entered rehab for substance abuse. We had no idea she battled with an addiction, and it's a topic that Eva is sensitive about. In 2008, she said: "Because celebrities' lives are so visible, I think it makes it look lighter than it is…The other day I was reading an article. I don’t even remember who the actress was, but…she said something like, 'I'm proud that I've had a whole career without making it to rehab.' I thought, that's such a negative twist on it. I'm proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better."
Eva might not agree with our interest in celebrity addiction, but hey, look at it like this. It's inspiration for those battling their own demons.
