GLAAD is Thrilled Chaz Bono is Joining Dancing With the Stars

Chaz Bono is making headlines for joining the cast of Dancing With The Stars. As one of the most famous transgender persons right now, The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) told RadarOnline that Chaz on DWTS is a huge accomplishment for the transgender community.

Chaz Bono is Sonny and Cher’s only son who was born female and began sex change operations to allow Chaz to physically resemble the man he always felt he was inside.

“At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast of a series like Dancing With The Stars would be a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture,” said the Senior Director of GLAAD.

Mara Keisling, executive director at the National Center for Transgender Equality jokes that Chaz is a great person to represent the community, but doesn’t know if he can dance.

“I don’t know if he can dance, but I think he will win over America very quickly.”

Kiesling hopes that there is no controversy surrounding Chaz’s inclusion on the show. Let the man dance I say!

“I don’t think people will be worked up about it, even though some groups get upset over everything. This is how we overcome hate, America will see that he is just like every other contestant on the show.”

Unfortunately, Chaz to has to prove his “normalness” on the show, when all he should be proving is that he can handle a foxtrot.

It’s been previously reported that Chaz will be partnered with a female DWTS pro. Also, Chaz is taking another step towards loosing weight by joining the show, which I like to refer to as the “Kirstie Alley effect” who lost 30 pounds by appearing on the show.

Chaz told People, “Doing this show is an opportunity for me to reach a larger more mainstream audience with just a simple message of being transgender is okay and not something to be scared of,” says Chaz.

Other stars to appear on the new season of DWTS are David Arquette, Elisabetta Canalis, Robert Kardashian, Nancy Grace, and Kristin Cavallari.

Chaz also has the Emmy’s to look forward to. His documentary, “Becoming Chaz” which follows his transition from woman to man was nominated for three Emmy’s after debuting on Oprah’s OWN Network in May.
