Paula brought her dance background and 9 years on “American Idol” to the mirrorball competition to shake things up.
In addition to Paula, new dance styles were put into the mix, like Hip-Hop, Contemporary, and Bollywood. Ohhh ahhhh.
As for the contestants, it was Shawn Johnson and Gilles Marini who took home top scores.
Gilles’ Bollywood themed dance earned him three perfect 10’s and one 9.5 from the judges. Carrie Ann told him, “Aladdin has nothing on you, Gilles Marini.” To be fair, Aladdin wasn’t a Bollywood star and was actually Arabian, but we’ll let that slide?
Shawn Johnson tied with Gilles for her crowd-pleasing mambo and Paula called it her “favorite dance” of the night.
As for the rest of the contestants, Kirstie Alley scored 7.5’s across the board for her Charleston, Paula called her a “joy to watch.”
Sabrina Bryan did a fun disco that got 9’s from the resident judges and only an 8.5 from Paula! Gasp!
Emmitt Smith got 9's across the board for his “exquisite” and “sensual” bolero routine.
Melissa Rycroft, who doesn’t get much press but dances pretty well got 9.5 and 9's for her jitterbug.
Apolo Ohno did a hip-hop routine which caused his partner Karina Smirnoff to fall, but still got 8.5’s from the judges and Paula saying he has “swagger.”
Kelly Monaco was last up and looked like she was falling in love with partner Val Chmerkovskiy which earned her 9.5 and 9’s across the board for their contemporary routine.
