Cory Monteith never got to deliver this romantic gesture to his girlfriend Lea Michele. Before the actor, 31, died of a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol in Vancouver nearly two weeks ago, he was planning a surprise birthday party and vacation for Lea.
"She didn't know what," a source told Us Weekly of 26-year-old actress. "But she thought it could be a party and possibly a trip somewhere."
In the weeks leading up to that fateful day, Cory and Lea appeared closer than ever. He voluntarily checked into rehab for substance abuse and Lea was by his side supporting him through and through.
"Lea and Cory were planning on moving in together after he got back from Vancouver," another source said to Us. Dating since early 2012, the duo "weren't talking engagement or marriage yet, but it was heading that way," the source explained. "The first step was [that] Cory was going to move in [to Michele's L.A. home] completely. He was already there all the time."
Cory may not have lived to see Lea turn 27, but as indicated in the latest issue of Marie Claire Mexico, she knew he cared about her—surprising her on the set of the LA shoot.
“They were 100 percent happy and together and in love at the time of his death,” the same source added. “They never broke up.”
