Clay Aiken Saves The World

Clay Aiken

Singer/ American Idol star Clay Aiken is on the quest to save the world. Unfortunately he left his bat suit at home and opted for a loose fit look in order to fit in with the natives. All jokes aside, Aiken is out in Afghanistan as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador to raise awareness about the hope and promise he has seen in the young people of the war-torn country.

Aiken told reporters in Kabul today, "The people here are very strong and they are very proud of their country," and praised the “strength and conviction of the Afghan people and their ability to make sure that this country returns to its glory after such a long darkness.”

Aiken has been a Goodwill Ambassador since 2004. Aiken preached to the people saying, “It has been a long winter for Afghanistan and it is Spring time finally.”

Aiken has visited schools in Kabul and in Bamiyan and stated, “As a former teacher I recognize that spark of hope and excitement all children possess when given the opportunity to learn. Rebuilding schools, training teachers, providing essential supplies and teaching materials are just some of the advances UNICEF and its partners have made to keep that hope flourishing.”

Clay challenged his fans to raise $100,000 in 10 days to buy books, computers, and other supplies for the school children in Afghanistan. They have already donated over $75,000 in just over 24 hours. There are almost 8 days to go in the challenge, so I think UNICEF will get their money.

the author of this article is pathetic and should be sent to these countries to see the plight of other people. Maybe then they won't have any 'jokes' to spew. Clay Aiken is impressive and I am now a fan.

Mr. Aiken is not a teacher. Never licensed as one and never hired by any school as one. He should not be "playing one on tv."
Posted by: A real Teacher on 04/13/2007 02:50 PM

A Real Teacher didn't do his homework. Clay Aiken is licensed to teach in North Carolina, and was a substitute teacher between high school and college.
Posted by: Harmony on 04/13/2007 02:57 PM

Sorry but he is not licensed as a teacher in North Carolina. He did say in his book that he got a job working in a classroom before he went to UNCC. There was a teacher there and others who taught in the classroom after that teacher went on maternity leave. But...he never did his student teaching requirement to get his teaching credential necessary for a license. Call the state if you think you are right. But you aren't. He is not a teacher.
Posted by: Susie on 04/13/2007 03:12 PM

all you claymates need a life.
Posted by: Ann on 04/13/2007 03:13 PM

Whether or not he is a licensed teacher, that was what he truly wanted to be. He apparently was approved to teach one of the kids touring with him at Christmas a couple of years ago. A license does not someone a teacher or a mentor. I don't think he visited the school pretending to be a teacher, he was just visiting and ask the children if "they wanted to be teachers". I admire him for at least trying to make a difference and not sitting on his money and watching the world go by.

I am impressed by Clay Aiken and his fans. People who help other people impress me.

I think we should be focusing on the needs of the children - this is the point that Clay Aiken is making, is he not? Priorities. Life is difficult enough for children in a war torn country, but with the emerging Taliban groups, there is more of an issue about expanding those classrooms to other cities and to the rural surrounding areas. I salute all the volunteers and UNICEF workers for their brave service in the most difficult places.

I LOVE CLAY AIKEN

Thank you for the article. I don't understand the need for a debate on whether Clay Aiken is a licensed teacher. He is bringing much needed attention and help to the children in Afghanistan. He and others who sacriface their time and put themselves in harms to help in whatever capacity they can should be praised. Thank you to Clay Aiken and UNICEF.

Clay is an honorable man. Clay Aiken is a teacher, of that there is no doubt, whether he is in a classroom or on the world stage, he continues to keep walking the walk. It just drives the heartless little people that follow him around on the internet crazy.

I continue to remain in awe of Clay Aiken. While Idol is promoting their "Idol Gives Back" show, Clay Aiken is on his third major trip for UNICEF. To date, he has been to N.Uganda in AFRICA and to visit tsunami survivors in Banda Aceh. Now he is over in Afghanistan. giving press conferences to international news organizations. Before he was a contestant on Idol, he had almost finished a degree in teaching children with special needs. During that time he worked with a boy named Michael who has autism. Prior to finishing his degree, Clay worked as long term substitute teacher for an entire classroom of special needs children (without even a teacher assistant). His focus, since Idol gave him the platform to have a voice, has been in helping children get the best possible education...both in the US and abroad. He has founded an education organization, The Bubel/Aiken Foundation which has raised millions of dollars to help with the education of children with special needs. Despite not working full time, for many years, in a specific classroom, Clay's involvement in educational programs has been ongoing. I think Clay has earned the right to define himself as a teacher.
Posted by: Deb on 04/13/2007 05:37 PM

And those who are bashing him even when the story is about Clay doing good for other people, should be the ones getting a life.
Posted by: Roni on 04/13/2007 05:42 PM

Clay, with UNICEF, is working to build a future for children in need while some work to destroy and demean him. Clay has his priorities straight.
Posted by: Sandy on 04/13/2007 05:46 PM

Look at all the assholes commenting here. Clay and his fans are trying to raise money to help the kids, and all you can do is insult him and his work with UNICEF? Stupid pathetic losers.
Posted by: Lisa on 04/13/2007 05:48 PM

Clay Aiken WAS a teacher in NC. He tutored an autistic child as well as teaching a class of autistic kids as a leave replacement. Nonetheless, he is to be admired for walking the walk. As for the naysayers, how about just taking a walk.
Posted by: Jackie on 04/13/2007 06:04 PM

Shame on the writer of this blog for being such a mindless sheep. Bashing a good man like clay is so stupid. Finding and using a picture where he is blinking just to make him look bad is pretty low too. Haters really need to find a better target. This is a good man.
Posted by: Dave on 04/13/2007 06:29 PM

Clay is one celebrity who definitely walks that walk. Rather than drink, drug, and run the bars partying all the time like others of his generation, Clay chooses to use his celebrity to do all he possibly can to help the underprivileged and handicapped children of the world. He should be an inspiration to all of us. Anyone who would bash this man should look in the mirror and be very ashamed.

BLOGBLIGHT ALERT! This blog is infested with blogblight: n. Malicious lies, half-truths, distortions and insinuations perpetuated mindlessly by bloggers publishing misinformation, photos or video from each others blogs, or the tabloids, with no thought to the veracity, authenticity or libelous nature of the content. The blight bloggers range from professional journalists (who should know better) down to the celebrity gossip hacks. Similar blight occurs in the other news media (tabloids) as well, but is more pervasive on the internet because of the anonymity accorded many of those who perpetuate it. Blogblight undermines one of the basic values of the internet, information sharing. Rather than seeing legitimate and accurate information, internet users see blogblight instead. This blog also has a bad case of DumBlight.

I like that Clay is using his fame for good causes. Thanks to him for showing us how to give back.
Posted by: marylee on 04/13/2007 07:57 PM

Why "jokes aside"? Why is it considered a joking matter at all? Clay Aiken, while not a licensed teacher, does have a degree in education, and is the UNICEF ambassador for education. He's doing a great job, bringing awareness to the educational needs of children around the world. So why is it considered something to joke about in the first place?
Posted by: Terry on 04/13/2007 09:39 PM

Wow, he is amazing! i didnt recognize him at all with that beard and those clothes! i hope the beard is not staying cause im not a big fan of that, but i do admire his work with UNICEF! he brings awareness to people in North America and encourages us to do good! i think that is the best influence one can have. he is also pretty darn funny!! i just love his expressions, and everything about him, for that matter!
Posted by: Wendy on 04/13/2007 09:57 PM

People need to lighten up! The blogger made a very, very mild joke and went on to point out the work Clay was trying to accomplish in Afghanistan and give him a lengthy quote so we could see from Clay's words what he's trying to accomplish. The blog didn't diss Clay at all. Take a deep breath and pull your heads out of your fandoms for a minute! As for the other extreme.... the people in here who can only spew vitriol and slander at a man who's actually getting up off his ASS and doing something about the world's problems instead of sitting around making fun of people from the anonymity of a computer screen are the ones who need to get a freakin' life. You guys are beyond pathetic. No wonder you don't know what a good man looks like. You've never seen one in the mirror.
Posted by: Junebug on 04/13/2007 10:02 PM

These people who are bashing Clay wouldn't give 5 cents to help children in Afghanistan. After all, helping kids is just not cool is it?
Posted by: Allison on 04/14/2007 03:22 AM

Kudos to Clay and his fans for raising so much money so quickly for the children of Afghanistan. As for the haters who continually post filthy lies about Clay all over the Internet - they show their true colors yet again. What pathetic, cowardly creeps they are! Attacking a man for trying to help needy children. It is a compliment to be hated by wackos like that. I would have very serious misgivings about anyone that they DID approve of!
Posted by: Amanda on 04/14/2007 04:24 AM

Clay Aiken and his fans are doing a great job!! I don't understand why people are arguing about whether he is a licensed teacher or not. These people are wasting their precious time, they should instead GO and make a donation! I always admire people with big heart. Thanks to the writer to bring this to me notice. Where can I make the donation?
Posted by: Richard on 04/14/2007 04:38 AM

Kudos to Clay Aiken. I already admired his good deeds before and this only cements my impression of him as a good human being with a good heart. Thank you Clay and those who are moved to donate.
Posted by: Maggie on 04/14/2007 05:30 AM

I think what Clay is doing is great. Good for him. You don't just go say, "hey, I'm going to be a UNICEF Ambassador". You have to be chosen and asked. So, he must have been well respected to get that honor. And just to clarify something. Clay IS licensed in NC as a teacher. He finished his degree right after AI and got his teaching degree. That is also in his book, if you read it all the way through. Not trying to cause turmoil, just thought I'd clear up that confusion with a fact. Way to go Clay and his fans for helping the children!!
Posted by: suziee on 04/14/2007 06:25 AM

I'm impressed with the Afghan people and their spirit. I'm also impressed with Clay Aiken for his words of encouragement for their education. Why must some people bash a person for doing good work? I don't understand the malice at all.
Posted by: Roxanne on 04/14/2007 06:35 AM

The comments here only point out the insanity of this world. A young man is doing good work, bringing awareness to many, raising money and there are those who are obsessed with whether he has a right to call himself a teacher? As a father and a teacher I am amazed that there are those who consider the Clay fans obsessed. What I'm seeing is some very unhappy and unfortunate people who need to find something in their lives to enjoy and some good work to do.

UNICEF is an outstanding organization whose mission is to provide for the needs of the world's children. The notice they bring to their mission and their needs through the use of celebrity ambassadors is wonderful. Like it or not, many people DO pay attention when celebrities are involved. The end result is that more people become aware, some choose to help, and at the least, the previously uninformed become enlightened. Kudos to UNICEF and ALL their celebrity ambassadors, including Clay, for their hard word in making things better for all the children of the world. Thanks for the publicity!

About 10 days ago, Clay had an auction/gala for his own organization, BAF, and raised like $200,000. He is really an amazing person. I wish more Celebs would "walk" the walk, instead of just "talk" the talk. Keep up the good work Clay!

Mr. Aiken is indeed a great motivator and role model. I recall his comments while a contestant on AI and comments in LTS, he has always wanted to make a difference even before he became a big celebrity. Good for him. We need more people like Clay AIken in this world as opposed to haters who follow every topic about the man. The haters tell the Clay Aiken fans to get a life. It appears the fans of this wonderful young man have a life and they are also doing good. I think it is the haters who need to get a life. Apparently they have too much time on their hands.
Posted by: skye on 04/14/2007 09:19 AM

When Clay was on AI2, he was asked why he wanted the celebrity. He said it wasn't for the riches that fame brings, but rather for the "DIFFERENCE" HE COULD MAKE! From that day to this, Clay has been walking his talk! He is an incredibly wonderful humanitarian, who also happens to have the best singing voice on the planet. If you've never heard him sing, check out his latest CD, "A Thousand Different Ways".

Clay taught classes at the Raleigh YMCA. Clay taught an entire class of autistic children as a substitute when their regular teacher was on maternity leave. Clay taught another autistic boy in the boy's home over the summer. Clay taught various elementary classes about volunteerism & making a difference in your community. Clay taught music to 40 classes of high school & elementary ed students during his first Christmas tour, as well as one California classroom on MTV. Clay taught his young costar for the length of his second Christmas tour. Clay taught various children in Indonesia, Uganda & Afghanistan during his UNICEF travels. Clay has been appointed UNICEF's Ambassador of Education. Clay has been appointed to the President's Committee for Persons With Disabilities due to his Special Education bachelor's degree & his creation & running of the Bubel/Aiken Foundation for children with disabilities. Clay teaches his fans every day & the general public who are willing to listen to make a difference in the world with the blessings that God has given you. Anyone with even half a brain can see that Clay lights up when he is communicating with children. If all that doesn't make someone a teacher, then what is a piece of paper but a technicality?
Posted by: benny on 04/14/2007 10:07 AM

UNICEF knows how lucky they are to have such a genuine, compassionate ambassador of education in Clay Aiken. Clay and his fans have done immeasurable good for many causes and it is a thrill to once again lend support...this time to the needs of the children in Afghanistan.

Clay Aiken is one of the celebrities who truly uses his fame to do good in the world. I admire him greatly for this.

Clay is inspiring and should be applauded. For all of you who cannot see the good in Clay and others , look into your self to see the good inside of you, so you can see the good in others. It takes one to know one. Great Job Clay and I am so proud of you and your commitment to the world. I support you and your mission Thank you UNICEFF
Posted by: ER on 04/14/2007 04:07 PM

Clay did receive his teaching degree about 3 years ago. Since he couldn't finish his semester while appearing on AI-a profession suggested he create a 'dummy' foundation to receive his degree. Fans, that summer, got wind of this 'foundation' and starting donating money during a summer tour. Clay realized he had to do something with this money ($50,000, I think) and that is how the real Bubel/Aiken Foundation got started. (Bubel is for Diane Bubel-the mother of the autistic child Clay was mentoring and who suggested Clay audition for AI2). If you go into the website: bubelaikenfoundation.org you will see it is an extremely well-run charity and is already giving out grants and doing wonderful things for developmentally disabled children. As for Susie: Claymates have lives. They are students (of ALL ages), homemakers, grandmothers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, clerks, professionals, etc. It seems YOU are the one who needs to get a life that doesn't put down people doing great things. No other AI contestant; winners, losers and runners-up, are doing the charitable work to the extent that Clay is doing.
Posted by: tts on 04/14/2007 06:13 PM

Clay Aiken's tireless efforts in this role impresses the heck out of me. The man has my respect, and I went back to make a second donation to help him reach his goal. He has some amazingly compassionate fans.
Posted by: terrie on 04/14/2007 07:22 PM

Say what you will about Clay Aiken, gay, straight, a wonderful singer and nerd. But the man is truly on a mission to help people and no one deny that it something to be admired. I have seen him in concert many times and he is an amazing entertainer, bringing everyone into the moment. But he also brings those who listen into the moment of helping others. I am proud of this man and AI should acknowledge this man as not only a contender on their show but someone who has gone beyond making records but giving his heart and sole to helping others. I am a fan for life...way to go Clay and also to your fans who never say to no to helping others when you ak them to.

I used to be a fan of Aiken, then I found out he had a fling with Kelly Clarkson when they went on tour together. I saw it with my own eyes and it just made me know Clay was not as pure as he likes people to think. I guess it's good of him to help, but I just am not a fan anymore, as I cannot trust him.
Posted by: Katt on 04/15/2007 10:32 AM

Kelly Clarkson huh? Well good him! I would rather hear that kind of a story than the gay stuff! I don't think he ever said he was pure as the driven snow, maybe when he was on idol but not since then. And he certainly does not want his fans to put him up on a pedestal because no maintain that kinda of idol worship. He is just a man trying to do the best we can with what he was given. And if he has a little fun along the way good for him!
Posted by: pk on 04/15/2007 12:51 PM

Remember when Kelly wrote that song about him when they were touring together about "don't say that you love me, don't say that you want me". I think she was pretty tore up about the whole thing as she said afterwards that she even when she marries, she would never love her husband as much as she loves Clay Aiken. I think he really cared about her but she wasn't old enough or smart enough for him. I think that's why her fans hate him so much--he broke her heart.
Posted by: kc on 04/15/2007 07:06 PM

Clay admitted that his work with autistic children filled him with a need to give back. He said that if that hadn't happened, his pop star stuff might be all for his own benefit alone. A truly honest assessment! But he's hooked and committed to his causes, to help children and those with disabilities. He continues to inspire me and make me a better person, reminding me of my responsibilities that I might sometime forget. And of course, being a super-talented, gorgeous, sexy sweet guy makes him all the more appealing. I love this man! You bashers, stop it already--go donate to Clay's Unicef fund. It will make you a better person. Try it! You'll feel good about yourself!
Posted by: Carol on 04/16/2007 10:40 AM

And a PS about Kelly Clarkson: Kelly and Clay continue to be good friends. She stayed at Clay's house with Ruben when she did one her last tours. Clay drove her to the venue. I hardly think there are any bad feelings there! Clay continues to support her and vice-versa. Lawd, how stories go around and get twisted! Yikes!
Posted by: Carol on 04/16/2007 10:46 AM

Well, all you people who are spewing hate at Clay Aiken should take a step back and think "WHAT AM I DOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE"? Thank God we have someone in this sin-sick-whatever-feels good-do-it world that is totally selfless and his thoughts are about making a difference !! FROM THE MOUTH OF CLAY AIKEN: “My absolute priority more than having a hit song is to set a good example. There is a difference between image and appearance. Your appearance is how you look. Your image comes from what you do. My goal is to be triumphant in using where I am to do something bigger that what I am.” “I didn’t get this singing voice to make myself rich and famous. I got it to become a better messenger.” “My mother prophesied years ago that my voice would take me places. She was certain that there was a reason I was able to sing. I’m still discovering what that reason is, what it is that God wants to happen." (Clay Aiken) Maybe others should take note !
Posted by: Kayla on 04/16/2007 11:16 AM

Good for you, ER! You obviously did your homework on Clay and have been following him since his AI2 days as closely as I have. Clay did indeed graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2003 with a degree in special education. Since he was unable to student teach due to AI2, he and the school decided that giving him a "project" of designing a foundation, setting up funding for the foundation and implementing a plan for the foundation to remain sustainable was a good "substitute" for student teaching. He received his degree in December 2003, and during the Christmas tour of 2005, he personally tutored Gregory Ellis who played "Tommy" in the production. The reason he tutored Gregory was because he was licensed to teach in North Carolina, and Gregory also comes from North Carolina. This way, Clay could use his creditials and Gregory would still receive an education while touring. I also have to agree with those who say, "what does it matter if he has a teaching degree or not? He's doing great things". Clay is one person that I not only admire as a singer and am a true fan, but I also admire him as a human being. He strongly believes that if you have a microphone, than you may as well say something worth while. His words - and actions - definitely do that and I wish nothing but the best for Clay - both on and off the stage.

It is so sad to see ohers attacking someone who is making a difference. The attackers are no better than the guy who killed all those people in VA. We need to learn to help each other more and change this world. I have seen the proof that a group of Kelly fans have hired John to work to distroy Clay with the gay thing. How sad. I thought that Kelly fans were better than that. Good Lawd Clay and Kelly are still good friends. Lets work together to change this country, or your sons and daughters could be the next to be killed because they make fun of someone.

Ya know, I kinda remember that when Kelly said she'd never love a husband as much as she loves Clay. I thought it a bit odd at the time, but if they had a romantic relationship, I guess it makes sense. He certainly seems to adore her. Good for Clay on all his charitable work!

A little late to this but I have a serious quetion. I am doing some research on UNICEF ambassadors and as I read about Clay Aiken and all the good he has been doing, I keep coming across these very bizarre comments that try to tear this guy down. My question is this: What do these ppeople do besides hit all the internet sites and slam Clay Aiken? I'm interested to find out who these people are. Are they disgruntled former fans because they seem to be very cruel and extremely obsessed with the guy? It's abnormal.
Posted by: randell on 05/09/2007 12:17 AM

sadly randell, most of this is a bi-product of the "my Idol is BETTER than your Idol" phenomenon. Most if the inane comments are Idol fans that don't care for Clay. Others are just idiots that have nothing better to do. Clay is someone who could teach them some insight into the way people need to be treated, but sadly they'd never listen.

I am so glad that with his "power" instead of abusing it he is helping the world become a better place, which is what one day I plan to do. Not to mention he is my most favorite idol to look up to when I am persueing my dreams and overcoming my fears. I love your music also Clay my parents and younger siblings have practically memorized all your songs since I have your voice blaring out of my stereo 12 hours a day and at work... they have asked me to resort to new songs. So can you make a new cd? I like your music. And love everything you do in this world, every one should look up to you and follow in your foot steps. My heart goes out to you and please keep safe over there, or where ever you go because a whole country would be devestated if something bad happened. Love you lots! Your #1 fan
