Christian Bale. biography
Christian Bale was born on January 30, 1974, in Pembrokeshire, Wale and made his on-screen debut in a commercial at the age of 9.
Bale’s acting ability was later discovered when Steven Spielberg picked the youngster to appear in Empire of the Sun (1987) over 4,000 other hopefuls.
Bale’s memorable performance went on to earn him the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in a Motion Picture and lead him to a more prominent role in the Walt Disney Pictures musical Newsies (1992). Despite the films poor performance at the box office, it didn’t stop Bale from landing the role of Theodore Laurence opposite Winona Ryder in the classic flick Little Women in 1994.
After co-starring alongside Nicole Kidman in Henry James’ The Portrait of a Lady (1996) and the romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999), Bale got his big break as well as his first starring role as Patrick Bateman in the cult classic American Psycho (2000).
In 2004, Bale lost more than 60 pounds to truly portray a man suffering from insomnia in the psychological thriller The Machinist, weight he immediately put back on when he transformed into Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins (2005). His acting ability was again put under the microscope when he took on the persona of an ex-army ranger in Harsh Times (2005) as well as an American pilot imprisoned during the Vietnam War in Rescue Down (2006).
Bale’s career continued building momentum with starring roles alongside such prominent actors as Hugh Jackman in The Prestige (2006), Russell Crowe in 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Cate Blanchett in I’m Not There (2007).
The following year, he returned as Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight (2008) before starring in the big-budget blockbusters Terminator Salvation (2009) and Public Enemies (2009) with Johnny Depp.
A year later, Bale’s critically acclaimed performance in the award-winning biopic drama The Fighter (2010) resulted in his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He then reprised his role as Bruce Wayne in the box office hit The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
Bale’s most recent projects include, the thriller Out of the Furnace (2013) alongside Zoe Saldana, the drama American Hustle (2013) with Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams, Terrence Malick’s romantic drama Knight of Cups (2014) opposite Natalie Portman, and the drama Exodus (2014).
