Charlie Hunnam’s startling departure from the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is due to scheduling conflicts with his FX series “Sons of Anarchy,” according to reps. You know, the same series that’s already been on the air for about five years. So did everyone involved in Fifty Shades just somehow forget to consider that when casting him?

Naturally, a lot of insiders aren’t buying this story and according to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s definitely more at work than the statement offered.

Namely, a lack of creative control is key; Charlie, who fun Thursday morning fact! is also a screenwriter (he has a script in development with Brad Pitt’s production company), and he wanted to be more involved in refining the script. However, he was met with some resistant by the film’s director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Then there’s the very loud echo chamber with no off switch (Twitter), which went into overdrive upon the announcement that Charlie would be playing the infamous Christian Grey. The media circus that ensued may have been too much to handle for the star.

THENNNN, there’s this oh-so-minor detail that he was only offered a reported $125,000 to play the most sought-after role in Hollywood (sought-after if you’re looking for instant fame, but no creative respect, apparently), which must’ve been tourture—and not in the good Fifty Shades of Grey kind of way.
