Miss USA Respects Miss California's Opinion

Miss California Carrie Prejean has come under fire this week for her answer to the question surrounding furthering legalization of gay marriage to other states.

Everyone has felt the need to put in their two cents on the issue, including Shanna Moakler, Britney Spears, and Miley Cyrus.

And now, the winner of the Miss USA competition, North Carolina’s Kristen Dalton, has spoken up in support of Miss California. She appeared on the Today Show this morning, and Al Roker asked her how she would have answered the controversial question.

She replied, "The beautiful thing about America is that we have the right to choose, we have the right to choose what partner we want to love, commit and spend the rest of our lives with. I think all couples should be able to be recognized legally, and they should be able to enter into a union. Whether or not that should be defined as marriage ... I'll leave that up to the politicians."

Dalton agreed that the question, posed by judge Perez Hilton, was fair. She told the Today show, "I respect her opinion. The beauty of America is that we all have a right to our own opinion. I'm proud of her for speaking from her heart, and she's passionate and what she believes in, and she's proud of herself."

She’s probably thanking her lucky stars Miss California was put in that position so it secured her the crown! But it sounds like even if Miss North Carolina was asked that same question, her answer would have been more acceptable to general public.

Ms Daly says that if Miss NC had gotten the question, perhaps her answer would have been "more acceptable to the general public". I've got news for you, Ms Daly-- to millions of us in the "general public", Miss California's answer was perfectly acceptable. If someone had expressed support for gay marriage and lost the competition as a result, so many who have criticized Miss CA would have been outraged. But these same people are willing to punish her for her opposite opinion. Whatever happened to "I may oppose what you say, but will defend your right to say it?"
