Cameron Diaz: My Dad’s Death Made Me Stronger

Cameron Diaz always has a smile on her face. But inside, she’s been struggling with the death of her father last year. Cameron lost her father to pneumonia at the same time she was filming the movie My Sister’s Keeper, which is about a family coping their daughter who has cancer.

In a new interview with Vogue, Cameron says, "I think, emotionally it definitely took its toll."

When she learned of her father’s death, production on the movie was briefly shut down. But she realized upon returning to work that it was nice to be able to come back to a caring cast and crew. Cameron said, "It's the human experience. You know, that's what the heart does. Things are given to us, and things are taken away. And I think the heart becomes stronger, more capable."

Cameron also says the loss has helped her to realize more about herself as a person. She says, "People who put labels on themselves limit themselves. If you are a woman who's been labeled as a sex symbol, for instance – I mean, I am not saying that's the label people would apply to me. But if you see yourself that way, inevitably you get to a point when you are no longer a sex symbol. And if you can't move past that, you’re putting a limit on yourself; you're arresting your development. And that's where I think a lot of women get in trouble."

This is a side of Cameron we don’t often get to see! It’s so hard to deal with the loss of a family member. But it seems as though Cameron has been able to stay positive and move on with her life and her work, which is so important.”
