Dr. Phil Regrets Visiting Britney

Dr. Phil has been in hot water since he visited Britney Spears in the hospital and made a public statement about her. Looking back, Dr. Phil says he regrets talking to the press about her condition.

He says, "Was it helpful to the situation? Regrettably, no. It was not, and I have to acknowledge that and I do. I definitely think if I had it to do it over again, I probably wouldn't make any statement at all. Period."

At first Dr. Phil said that Britney's mother Lynne is the one who asked him to visit Britney, but then it was reported that he was trying to get Britney and her parents to appear on his TV show, but didn't go over so well. Dr. Phil got so much bad press from his visit that a lot of big named celebrities are now refusing to show up to his big 1,000th Episode Special.

Dr Phil was not a psychiatrist, he was once a practicing psychologist. It is not common for licensed psychologists to have to undergo personal psychological evaluations in order to maintain their license or practice. All I am trying to say is that he screwed up majorly, he knows it and admits it now. But shouldn't someone investigate his propensity to still practice some for of psychology unlicensed? You can't have it both ways: see someone as a psychologist but not have to follow any of the rules of practice under a license. Offering an opinion of Britney without ever seeing her is one thing and many Drs. offer "expert opinions" all the time for people they have never met or even see. And if Dr. Phil wanted to do a whole show where he analyzed Britney and gave opinions about her without having met her, that is one thing. But to actually see her and talk with her and then discuss a private conversation with the press, offering opionions based on that conversation is really shady and if he was licensed it would have been illegal. And I agree that the Spears family should have never involved him in the first place. Lastly, I am allowed to have an opinion that is different from you and it doesn't mean that I "look UP to trailer park trash." It is possible to argue with someone and not insult them -you should try it some time.

Wow - you must be the people that look UP to trailer park trash! First of all, Britney is NOT his patient, therefore he didn't violate any rights she has as a patient. Secondly, he was giving an opinion. How many times have you read in the tabloid magazines about a dr. who gives an opinion about a celebrity's lifestyle, eating habits, etc. and it always says " the doctor does not treat this celebrity" but is merely offering an opinion! Well that's what HE did. If it's so well known that he's some quack or a non-practicing, unlicensed doctor then why did the Spears' call him? for more publicity I suppose. AND by the way, anyone working in psychiatry has to be evaluated at some point or another. It's not part of some punishment!

Oprah's company owns Dr Phil show. If she has any decency she would rip his show off the air. What he did was Uncalled for, and totally unethical, not to mention he violated Briney's rights. What Dr does what he did ?. He ran straight to the PRESS. Had a show lined up!! Then to find out this guy isn't a licsene Phychologist. If that don't be all!!

Dr. Phil is completely unethical and should be stopped from practicing any form of unlicensed psychology. There is a reason why there are rules around Dr/patient confidentiality and just because he doesn't have a license doesn't mean it is okay for him to profit from his visit with Britney. The family asked him to see her because of his background in psychology not as a talk show host and his actions may have contributed to Britney refusing to seek help or invest in treatment. Dr. Phil should be investigated and should be stopped from embarassing the field of professional psychology. According to Wikipedia, in 1989 the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists imposed disciplinary sanctions on Dr. Phil and he was ordered by the Board to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical evaluation, undergo a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to continue his private practice in Texas. As of 2008, Dr Phil has not completed the conditions imposed by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists, and he is not licensed to practice psychology in Texas, California or anywhere else.

He doesn't even practice anymore - he's a talk show host at this point. She is not his patient. Therefore none of that patient confidentialty applies! He was seeing her at the request of her family - maybe he shouldn't have said anything to the press - but he certainly isn't obligated by his profession NOT to speak out. Everyone is picking him apart saying he isn't really a doctor and yet they're the same people pointing the finger in disgust saying that he broke some sort of trust and he has poor ethics...blah blah blah. Back off the guy, he's smarter than most. AND he KNOWS britney's a freakin' nut job in need of help!
