You know the guy at a karaoke party you envy for being way too good at singing? This is just like that, only the guy is Britney Spears and you weren’t invited…
The “Hit Me Baby One More Time” singer put her vocal cords on display during a Wednesday episode of FOX’s “The X Factor.” Britney sang “Happy Birthday” to fellow judge L.A. Reid during the singing competition crew’s audition stop in Kansas City, Missouri.
The very staged surprise played out like a sweet judge to judge gesture…
Back stage, Britney entered the scene – sparkling in a white, form-fitting dress – carrying a green and white frosted cake, decorated with lit candles.
Wait… Wasn’t “keep open flames away from Britney” part of her conservatorship?
A very flattered L.A. looked on as Brit held up the cake belted the lyrics solo to “Happy Birthday” (I hope they paid the copyright fee!) as if she was auditioning for the show, complete with dramatic pauses and vibrato.
The moment was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy in 1962… Back before record producers lived as long as L.A.
"They don't have enough candles for my age," Reid joked.
He blew out the candles and hugged both Britney and Demi Lovato, smiling.
“You’re the sweetest thing in the whole world,” he added, before digging in.
Other key moments on the Wednesday show include appearances from contestants Deangelo Wallace, who was handcuffed for trying to steal the microphone after his audition, and Panda Ross, who was rushed to the hospital for pneumonia, following an impressive rendition of “Bring It On Home To Me.”
“The X Factor” continues the shenanigans Thursday at 8/7 c on FOX.
