Beyonce had to do a lot of research for her new role in the film Cadillac Records, and that meant learning about people struggling with drug addictions. In the role, Beyonce plays Etta James, who battled many drug addictions throughout her life. To get into character, she decided to visit rehab clinics so she could get a better understanding of the struggle addicts live with.
Beyonce visited a New York substance abuse charity and had a meeting with six African American women who gave up their lives because of their heroin addictions. Beyonce says she had no idea just how emotional the visit to the center would be.
She said, "I said, 'I have to do this movie' - but I was terrified. I never tried drugs in my life so I didn't know about it all. It was hard to go to rehab. I learned a lot about life and myself."
The charity's chief executive, Howard Meitiner, adds, "It was very intense. Everyone was crying. These were women who have lost everything because of drugs - their homes, their families, their jobs."
This should be a very powerful movie. Beyonce has definitely proved herself as a great actress with her role in Dream Girls, so we’re looking forward to seeing if she can pull off playing Etta James!
