Stop the presses! Err, stop the Internet? Everyone calm down and listen to me! Beyonce was lip-syncing the national anthem at the presidential inauguration yesterday! Do you guys feel BEYtrayed? Betrayéd?
A rep for the U.S. Marine Corp Band who played the live music at the event told TMZ, “Beyonce mouthed the words to a pre-recorded studio version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’”
If you are thinking to yourself, “but it looked so real,” you are not alone. Beyonce even ripped out her earpiece mid-way through the performance, which suggested she was belting and the feed-back was too loud in her ear! If she wasn’t actually singing, it doesn’t matter what she does or doesn’t hear in her ear. Maybe she just did that for dramatic effect?
The rep did say that it’s standard practice to record a studio version and Beyonce decided to go with the track at the last minute.
“We all know Beyonce can sing…We don’t know she chose to use the pre-recorded track,” adds the spokesperson.
But here’s the catch. Kelly Clarkson DID sing live at the inauguration! Did she just upstage Queen B!? Oh no she didn’t!
However, I’m told by our in-house Beyonce expert that lip-syncing the national anthem for large-scale events is common practice.
For example, at the 1991 Super Bowl, Whitney Houston lip-synced the national anthem and it was later released as a hit single AND that rendition has gone down in history as the greatest performance of the national anthem live OR recorded.
So Beyonce’s in great lip-syncing company, is what I’m trying to say.
