In the midst of the Obama's Presidential celebration, Sen. Ted Kennedy, collapsed during a luncheon in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.
The brother of former president John F. Kennedy reportedly started suffering seizures while at a table. Paramedics were called to the scene at 2:35 p.m. ET and he was quickly transported to a hospital. Kennedy was diagnosed with malignant brain cancer back in May of 2008.
"Sen. Kennedy had a seizure" which "lasted a while," a Republican House member told CNN.
Speaking of the incident Obama said: "First of all, I know that while I was out of the room, concern was expressed about Teddy. I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now, a part of me is with him. And I think that's true for all of us.
"This is a joyous time. But it's also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family and Vicki."
Senator Robert Byrd was also separately taken out of the Congressional luncheon. Byrd, 90, was reportedly having issues eating.
Later in the afternoon, Kennedy was said to be "awake and alert," reports NBC News, while Byrd's office said the senator was "okay." More details coming soon!
UPDATE: Doctors say Kennedy suffered from "simple fatigue," but he will remain in the hospital overnight for observation.
