This shouldn’t surprise anyone—Avatar is the fastest-selling DVD of all time. According to the numbers that came in today, the James Cameron flick has sold 6.7 million DVDs and Blu-Ray discs in its first four days out.
That makes it the best-selling DVD ever, beating out Titanic. It’s also sold 2.7 million Blu-Rays, which beats out The Dark Knight’s record of 2.5. And it took only four days to get that number! We’ll see if Avatar can beat out The Dark Knight’s weekly number of 13 million copies sold.
What makes this even crazier is that the DVD release contains no special features or 3D effects—just goes to show how much people loved that film, and wanted to see more! Plus, as Hollyscoop previously reported, a second special-edition version of Avatar is scheduled to hit shelves near the holidays, with a 3-D edition planned for 2011. The film is slated to return to theaters for an encore run with six minutes of new footage in August.
Then after that, we can start looking forward to the two more sequels Cameron has promised us!
