Director James Cameron spoke at the PGA Awards over the weekend, and said, “I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.”
So just how long are fans going to have to wait? “Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan,” revealed Cameron.
Ouch…now that’s a test of our patience! But seeing as though the first movie was almost three hours long, we’ll cut James some slack on his writing timeline.
“Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form,” he said.
Cameron also revealed a partnership that gives his Avatar franchise new meaning.
“Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world,” says the director. “I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.”
With that info, there’s no way anyone can get mad over the waiting time. It’ll just make the hype that much better!

Avatar 2 and 3 will be released a year apart. Avatar 2 will be released in December 2014 and Avatar 3 will hit theaters in December 2015.
James Cameron: Most Powerful Man in Movie World
So what does Cameron think about this amazing project?
"It is a rare and remarkable opportunity when a filmmaker gets to build a fantasy world, and watch it grow, with the resources and partnership of a global media company. AVATAR was conceived as an epic work of fantasy – a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world. With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox.
Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience's expectations for the richness of AVATAR’s visual world and the power of the storytelling. In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of AVATAR’s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, BitTorrent users who downloaded the movies illegally could get a nasty letter from the "U.S. Copyright Group (USCG), a Washington D.C.-based group of attorneys that has obtained the IP addresses of thousands of BitTorrent users and has begun suing them for downloading other independent films."
Avatar to be Re-Released this Fall
And they already have a list of IP addresses of persons who likely downloaded the movies! Yikes!
Watching a crappy downloaded version of 'Avatar' can never compare to seeing it in theaters or on Blu-Ray, so skip that potential lawsuit, cough up the $20 and buy it on DVD.

That makes it the best-selling DVD ever, beating out Titanic. It’s also sold 2.7 million Blu-Rays, which beats out The Dark Knight’s record of 2.5. And it took only four days to get that number! We’ll see if Avatar can beat out The Dark Knight’s weekly number of 13 million copies sold.
What makes this even crazier is that the DVD release contains no special features or 3D effects—just goes to show how much people loved that film, and wanted to see more! Plus, as Hollyscoop previously reported, a second special-edition version of Avatar is scheduled to hit shelves near the holidays, with a 3-D edition planned for 2011. The film is slated to return to theaters for an encore run with six minutes of new footage in August.
Then after that, we can start looking forward to the two more sequels Cameron has promised us!

In the past, Cameron has talked about the intention of working on a sequel to the Oscar nominated film in the near future.
He said previously, "We always planned on continuing the world and continuing the characters. In fact, that was part of the original pitch to 20th Century Fox."
Sam Worthington Up for the Challenge of Avatar 2
Now he tells the LA Times, "Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment—a different setting within Pandora. And I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well."
Cameron says it’s no easy task creating Pandora, but now that they have the materials from the first film, it’ll take faster to complete this time around.
"We're going to spend a lot of money building this world and all these digital characters and digital plants and trees and mountains and so on, and then once we've got it, we've got it. It's not like it's a practical set that when you build it, you have to tear it down and you're left with a big pile of lumber out behind the studio. We have all that stuff so we can go again,” he explained.
Hollyscoop spoke EXCLUSIVELY with Sam Worthington recently, and he told us he’s up for as many sequels Cameron decides on. He told us, “When the boss decides that he is up for the challenge, when he writes it and tells me to jump, I’ll jump.”
He also joked about some character changes he hopes will happen to Jake, who is now part of the Nav’i race. “I want him to be fat,” Sam confessed.
We don’t think that’s possible! Cameron says the storyline in the second film will definitely have us wanting more. "We expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story—not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film," he explains.
For now, you can buy Avatar out on DVD tomorrow!

Hollyscoop talked EXCLUSIVELY with the film’s star Sam Worthington, and he gave us the scoop on what he knows about a possible Avatar 2.
We asked Worthington when we could expect to see a sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time, and he told us, “When the boss decides that he is up for the challenge. When he writes it and tells me to jump, I’ll jump.”
Avatar to Be Re-Released This Fall
We also asked Sam what kinds of changes he’d like to see his character go through for the sequel. “I want him to be fat,” he joked. He added that he’d like to see his enemies try and kill his Avatar with an arrow.
We’d prefer it if he stayed alive! We hope James Cameron is open to a sequel because we can’t wait to see more!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron is in talks with the studio to bring his Oscar nom back to 3D theaters, and with some extra scenes!
The reason behind the second release is that, despite being the highest-grossing movie of all time, studio heads believe money was lost when Alice in Wonderland came to theaters last weekend in 3D and Imax.
Cameron reportedly has 40 minutes of extra footage that didn’t make the theatrical release. Unfortunately, because of regulations, he can only tack on and extra ten, because 170 minutes is the maximum length movies can be in Imax.
One scene has to do with Jake Sully's avatar proving himself to the Na'vi people; the other involves a native festival during which tribe member Tsu'tey gets drunk.
Through March 4, "Avatar" had grossed $127.1 million of its $712.5 million domestic haul in Imax theaters; this week's giant-screen take was $175,884.
We’re sure there are thousands of people who would happily see the film in the theater again—especially with the extra footage!
