Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver: Celebrities Who Divorce After a Long Marriage

Sources say Maria Shriver began contemplating divorce in 2009, when Arnold Schwarzenegger became "impossible" to live with. Maria’s children reportedly saw what was going on and urged their mom to divorce. But after twenty-five years, you would think you’d either be used to living together or too old to care.

After Maria moved out of the house, sources say Arnold has been “working extremely hard” to make the marriage work and win Maria back. But despite their amicable breakup and Maria’s rumored hesitation, the couple officially announced their separation Monday.

It just goes to show, no matter how long you’ve been married, you have to keep working at it. Here are 6 celebrity couples that didn’t last, despite their long marriages.

Al & Tipper Gore: 40 Years. When this couple announced their divorce last year, people were shocked. Mostly because they weren’t shy about making out in front of everyone at the 2000 Democratic Convention. The high school sweethearts were married for nearly half a century, and seemed to have kept the fire going. People called their relationship a “storybook marriage”, but in the end, Al said, “She went and did her thing.”

Elaine Irwin & John Mellencamp: 20 Years. A friend of the couple said, “things changed, directions differed and ambitions have taken their own course.” The two split recently, after a nearly 20-year marriage, but are reportedly still friends.

Tina & Matthew Knowles: 30 Years. In 2009, Beyonce’s mom and designer, Tina Knowles, filed for divorce from her husband after he fathered the child of another woman, Alexsandra Wright. In late 2010, however, the couple failed to appear in court, inciting rumors that they called off the divorce.

Ann & George Lopez: 17 Years. In one of the most scandalous divorces of the past few years, Ann Lopez and comedian George Lopez were married for 17 years, and Ann even donated a kidney to her now ex-husband. Rumors abounded that Lopez had cheated on his wife with hookers. Even Kirstie Alley joined in on the gossip, after Lopez took a jab at her weight, tweeting: @georgelopez I don't need or want ur apology...I want your kidney dude..on behalf of ur X and all the women uv insulted...give it back."

Robin Wright & Sean Penn: 14 Years. Despite fresh feelings of bitterness after their divorce, with Penn saying, “I just got taken for one half of everything,” the two are reportedly still friends. It was even rumored that Robin Wright hung out with Sean and his new girlfriend, Scarlett Johansson.

Linda & Hulk Hogan: 26 Years. They seemed like a perfectly happy couple on the Hulk’s reality show, but apparently, Hulkamania didn’t run wild on Linda. There was no specific reason given when they filed, but sources say the news wasn’t surprising. Apparently, the couple was even separated during some of the filming of their show.

Looks like it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been married, there’s not necessarily a point at which you’re safe. But because we don’t want to end on a depressing note, here are a few celebrity couples that have been together for ages and made it work:

Pauletta & Denzel Washington: Denzel has been married to Pauletta for 28 years. Denzel revealed the secret to his successful marriage: “I do what she tells me. Trust me, that’s the key.” Listening, Arnold?

Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson: Hollywood’s favorite couple has been together for 23 years. Tom says the secret to a long marriage is finding “the right woman” and not being “an idiot”.

Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell: They’ve been together for 28 years, but they never married. Why mess with a good thing?
