Howard K. Stern Plans on Fighting Charges

Howard K. Stern was able to post bail last night and immediately following, did was he does best. Talk to the press.

He called ET right away to defend himself, saying he plans on fighting the charges raised against him, which is six felony counts for allegedly conspiring to provide Anna Nicole Smith with massive amounts of prescription drugs. Howard and his father both tell ET that the charges against him are false.

Only moments ago, the California Attorney General Jerry Brown spoke out about details in the case. He told reporters, "Prescription drugs...are becoming an even greater threat. The abuse in this case is serious, unfortunately it's not that unusual."

"Generally speaking, people think those drug dealers on the street corner are the only threat. This is one in a series of efforts to crack down on doctors."

Brown also stated that Stern and the doctors were "prescribing drugs excessively to a known addict, using false and fictitious names."

Referring to Stern as the "principal enabler," Brown said at the press conference this morning that he "funneled highly addictive drugs to Ms. Smith."

"We're not talking a few dozen, we're talking hundreds and hundreds of pills," he went on. "The law's been violated, it's a conspiracy, this is bad business."

Brown also believes Stern and the doctors were drawn to Anna Nicole because she was a celebrity. He said, "Probing into motives is always a speculative undertaking, but certainly there is a…gain here to be part of the celebrity glitz and glamour. These people were caught up with being in a relationship with and being around Anna Nicole Smith."

In response to the arrests of Howard K. Stern and two of Anna Nicole Smith’s physicians, Dr. David Sack, CEO of Promises Treatment Centers in Malibu, California released the following statement to Hollyscoop.com:

“Today’s developments in the tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith highlight the epidemic of prescription drug abuse that has emerged in this country over the last 5-10 years.

"At Promises, we believe that prescription drugs with abuse potential are particularly insidious because they are often over prescribed by doctors, some of whom enable the drug habits of addicted patients. Physicians must take responsibility for the fact that some patients may seek prescriptions and divert them to non-medical purposes.”

Their arraignments have been set for May 13th. Sounds like they’re all in hot water, but you know Howard will try and spin this to sound innocent.
