Jolie Blasts Disney

June 04, 2008

Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is blasting filmmakers at Disney for not featuring an African princess in their films. She says that the lack of diversity in their films really upsets her and Brad.

She tells Britain's OK! magazine, "(So) even the color of the children in the cartoon matters.

"There still isn't a Disney princess that's African and it's very difficult because our daughters' getting into princesses right now and it upsets me."

Hey, she has a great point! I'm sure if she offered to be the voice behind the princess, Disney would jump at the chance, right??

Santa Claus has always been white too- don't hear complaining about that! If it's not broken, don't try to fix it.

She has some valid points. The bigger question is when has she ever demanded a black leading man in any of her movies??? and if she had not adopted children of color would she ever have became aware of Disney's "racism" ???

I CANNOT BELIEVE MY EYES ON THIS PAGE! SOME OF THE COMMENTS ARE BEYOND BELIEF! SO THE LION KING IS A RACIST FILM!! WHAT PLANET ARE YOU ON PEOPLE!! ITS YOU WHO HAS THE PROBLEM NOT DISNEY! TAKE THE CHIPS OFF YOUR SHOULDERS AND GROW UP, DO YOU THINK KIDS REALLY CARE WHAT COLUR LIONS ARE THEY COULD BE BLUE AND GREEN FOR ALL THEY CARE THEY ARE JUST WATCHING A BLOODY CARTOON?? THERE WILL BE CALLS TO BOYCOTT ALL THINGS DISNEY AFTER THIS RUBBISH, HOW PATHETIC SOME PEOPLE ARE! I ACTUALLY THINK ANGELINA HAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, IF HER DAUGHTER FEELS INSECURE IT WILL BE HER FAULT FOR MAKING AN ISSUE OUT OF IT NOT DISNEYS!!!

It really comes to something when people bring racial issues into disney films!! for christs sake does it really matter, does she really think her daughter is going to give a damn, NO she will just watch the films and love them like every other little girl in the world, grow up ange! stop making issues out of NOTHING! ive never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life!

I totally agree... It's actually true that there are some racist features in disney's cartoons. Like Lion King, the evil ones are darker in colour...

No way! We already have little white brats running around thinking they are princesses, do we really need little trashy ghetto girls running around telling us how great they are?

bitch bitch bitch. That is all Jolie is and that seems to be all she can do.

It wasn't gossip. It was a CNN HEADLINE.
10:12PM 06/04/08 Quinn
and i highly doubt she has time to keep up with the latest gossip

I never new about the Disney movie. Anyways, she has a point why did it take so long to for disney to do it?

Imagine Jolie screwing up the voice of an african princess... that's all we need! Someone shove a shoe in her mouth. So tired of hearing her bitch on her soapbox!

Angelina Jawlie ... jawin off again. Jnnifr's chin is nothing compared to Angelina's JAW!!! Holy Nutcracker! and watch out Disney, Ms. Jawlie has made a press statemnt that she packs heat. What a JOKE we are all suckers empowering these delusional idiots
4:10PM 06/04/08 hmm
I hope this African princess from Disney that the comments before me are referring to have a proper princess. Im not black, but I feel like every black character in movies talk all ghetto-- typical stereotyping.
1:59PM 06/04/08 Tabitha
The news of Maddy and "The Frog Prince" made NATIONAL NEWS a few months back. If she kept up with current events, she would have known about it.

Birdie, the "she" I was referring to was Jolie. If non-famous people like myself or rob know that this movie is coming out, I can assure jolie has the means to find this out. So, as I said, I don't understand why she would make this comment when it is no secret the movie has been in the works for quite some time. Back to the voice issue, I am not saying that the controversy is correct, but it would be there and that is how it is. And the principle comes from the fact that Disney has never had a black princess, so this is a big deal. I am pretty sure there had already been cartoon characters of other races on TV. If people complained enough about the princess's name in the movie being Maddi because it "sounded like a slave name" and made it be changed to Tania, I guaratee they would be pissed if a white person did her voice. Sad, but true.

I don't know who the "she" is that Tiffany is referring to in her comment, (could be Jolie, could be me), but generally people aren't aware of movies that have yet to be released, unless you were fortunate enough to catch a trailer, or behind-the-scenes info. Good for Disney, good for Jolie (Zahara), and good for little African American/Black children. I do wonder how/why controversy would ensue if a non-white gave voice to the black princess. I guess children always read the credits at the end of a movie, (exactly, they don't). So I guess the controversy would come from adults. If its about principle then why isn't there any controversy over Adrien Beard,(non-indian) the voice of Apu, owner of the Kwik-E-Mart from the Simpsons, or how about Mike Henry who plays the black guy Cleveland from Family Guy. Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of voice actors that play characters different from there own race, and even species so instead assigning a black voice actor for a black cartoon character, or a white voice actor for a white cartoon character,so on & so forth why not let an individuals qualifications determine that. Birdie, over and out...for good this time.

I'm guessing she knows that Disney is about to release The Princess and the Frog and just wants to look like she made it happen.
9:05AM 06/04/08 Tiffany
Thank you Rob! You totally took the words out of my mouth. I don't know why she would make a public statement she knows nothing about. They have been working on The Princess and the Frog for quite a while so it's not like it's new news. And I do understand my2cents' comment about a white person doing the voice. It has nothing to do with how the voice sounds, it has to do with principle. It is obviously a milestone for Disney to have a black princess, so why would they essentially stir up controversy having a white person do the voice.

I agree with Birdie as well. AND I DO agree is Angelina put herself up there to voice an african character, Disney and any other studio would definitely back it. She's a powerhouse and should definitely offer it up.
8:53AM 06/04/08 Rob
"You would have thought that Disney would have had an African or Black princess by now." There are currently 3 non-white characters in the official princess series - Jasime, Mulan and Pocahontas. Jolie is moaning because there has not been an African princess yet. Disney is currently making its first movie with an African princess, The Princess and the Frog, which will be out next year.
7:59AM 06/04/08 Carol
Great post Birdie!! I totally agree with your post.
6:56AM 06/04/08 BIRDIE
It is VERY important for children of all different races to see a positive reflection of themselves in reality and television. Jolie has a very valid point, and so does Courtney. You would have thought that Disney would have had an African or Black princess by now. The only thing that comes remotely close is Lion King, a movie about African animals, not people,(regardless of what prejudice people may think). Anyhow, I thought "my2cents" comment about a white voice for a black character was non-sensical. You're looking at a cartoon character not a voice. You cannot differentiate between a black voice and a white voice,(please rid your mind of stereotypes, proper or improper use of the English language does not indicate one's race), so I don't see how that's even relevant. Birdie signing off......
6:43AM 06/04/08 Pache
Oh please, give it a rest. Do these morons have nothing better to do than complain about nothing.........
6:23AM 06/04/08 courtney
IT TOTALLY MATTERS THAT LITTLE AFRICAN AMERICAN GIRLS SEE POSITIVE IMAGES OF WOMEN WHO LOOK LIKE THEM..IT HELPS TO BUILD SELF ESTEEM .THIER HAS TO BE A BETTER BALANCE BETWEEN THE NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE IMAGES THAT ARE SHOWN AND THE LACK OF POSITIVE IMAGES NOT SHOWN...THI IS HOW YOU HELP CHANGE MINDS..
6:22AM 06/04/08 my2 cents
oh yes, a black african princess with a white person doing the the voice. soo relatable for a black african child. Your comment is moronic and it also shows why there is sp little diversity in holliwood.
