In this week’s most quotable quote of the week, Andrew Garfield on the sexuality of his web-slinging character:
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
During pre-production of the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise in which he’s the star, Andrew spoke at length about how to tackle Peter Parker’s teen years, suggesting that sexual experimentation isn’t foreign territory in this Spider-Man’s brave new world.
Andrew even had a prospect in mind.
“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire,” the actor said. “He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
We’re not interior decorators here, but “Why Can’t Spider-Man Be In A Gay Interracial Relationship?” is something we’d like to see cross-stitched into a series of throw pillows ASAP, because something like that could really brighten any room.
