It’s official… Anderson Cooper is gay. And, if you’re like us at Hollyscoop, your response is something like, “Didn’t we already know that?”
In a blog post today on The Daily Beast, writer Andrew Sullivan posted an email from Anderson Cooper about the newscaster and personality’s response to Entertainment Weekly’s article “The New Art of Coming Out in Hollywood.” Cooper’s reaction was lengthy, but one thing was made clear: he is gay and he is proud.
“The fact is, I’m gay,” said Cooper. “Always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
How’s that for a fine how do you do?
Anderson went on to explain that he previously wanted to maintain a level of “privacy for professional reasons.” He cited this privacy as the source of his effectiveness to perform his job as a journalist both safely and effectively. Also, frankly, it’s none of your business anyway…
“I've always believed that who a reporter votes for, what religion they are, who they love, should not be something they have to discuss publicly,” he said. “I’ve stuck to those principles for my entire professional career, even when I’ve been directly asked ‘the gay question.”
Cooper’s decision to officially come out of the closet now has to do with some recent reworking of that very philosophy. Remaining quiet might have given off the impression that he was afraid of who he was, which is “simply not true.”
So, in a bold move, he gave Sullivan permission to post the email and let the world know not only where he stands on the issue of coming out publicly, and - even bolder – does so himself.
Congrats to Anderson on the statement. We hope this a load off his shoulders… He finished strong, with a touching message to readers…
“The ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life..”
