It’s “Idol” results time folks. And, as promised, last night was shocker.
This week, Colton Dixon was cut from “American Idol,” causing quite a stir. Dixon’s trip to the bottom three was his first, but one was all that was needed to send the singer packing.
Joining Dixon in the bottom three last night were the slightly more predictable Hollie Cavanagh and Elise Testone, who arguably received the worst feedback from her performance Wednesday night.
The news seemed to surprise even the judges. They tried to reassure that funky-haired fellow.
“You have a huge career ahead of you,” said Randy Jackson. Jennifer Lopez agreed that this wouldn't be the last time that we heard the name Colton in pop music.
As the booing fans offered their objections, Dixon went on to apologize for his performance. He explained that he wasn’t up to his normal standard last night. Thanking judges for their feedback, he gave a wink to the crowd before departing.
What a champ.
Things weren’t as jarring for mentor Jimmy Iovine, though. Iovine had previously explained that Phillip Phillips had finished on “opposite sides,” favoring the performance Phillips gave of Usher’s “U Got It Bad” to Dixon’s version of Lady Gag’s “Bad Romance.”
The results from last night seem to verify Iovine’s theory that Dixon and Phillips were splitting the “heartthrob” votes and that at some point, they would pull to one side. Dixon couldn’t hold on any longer last night.
On a positive note, for the Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet fans out there, the previously bottom three spot holders made some great strides. Both stayed out of the losers ring this week.
So, yay for that.
