American Idol Phil Phillips To Celebrate America In D.C.

So let’s see… who should we get to entertain the masses during the celebration of Independence Day at the National Mall in Washington DC ?

Oh yeah! How about THE "American Idol" Phil Phillips? So, so obvious.

MTV is reporting on the affair which marks Phillips debut as the current king pop icon in America.

After his May 23rd victory on the FOX show, Phillips needed to get surgery for the severe kidney problems that plagued but clearly didn’t spoil his run throughout the competition.

Since the surgery, he’s been lying low in recovery mode,"I'm getting better each day, so that's a good thing. I'm just walking around, getting my strength back together."

He’s going to need that strength come Friday, when the American Idol Season 11 tour launches in Detroit.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we’ve got displays of national pride to produce, and things to blow up in the sky!

Despite oppressive temperatures and a risk of thunderstorms, the party at the Mall will go on.

In addition to Phillips, the crowds (anticipated to be around 300,000 strong) will be entertained by country singer Josh Turner, "Smash" star Megan Hilty, actor Matthew Broderick and composer John Williams (you know, the guy who scored a few film franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter).

The show will be put on on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol and will broadcast live on PBS and NPR. Tune in and get your America on.
