Alicia Keys. biography
Alicia Keys was born on January 25, 1981, in New York City and first rose to fame following the release of her commercially successful debut album Songs in A Minor, which resulted in five Grammy Awards.
Born Alicia Augello Cook, Alicia Keys began developing her piano skills at the age of 7 and further honed her musical talents at Manhattan’s renowned Professional Performance Arts School. Her power vocals as well as her instrumental artistry immediately made her a sought-after musician and eventually led her to signing with Artista Records in 1998.
When Clive Davis, the former president of Artista Records, left the company to form his label J Records in 1999, Alicia followed and went on to produce and write her debut album Songs in a Minor. Released in June 2001, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 236,000 copies within its first week. The certified 6x Platinum album spawned the commercial hit single “Fallin,” which resulted in Alicia taking home five Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album.
Alicia’s follow-up album The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003) found similar success, selling more than eight million copies worldwide and producing the top-ten charted singles “You Don’t Know My Name,” “If I Ain’t Got You” and “A Woman’s Worth.” The album went on to earn her multiple accolades, including the Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (“If I Ain’t Got You”) and Best R&B Song (“You Don’t Know My Name”) in 2005.
In 2007, Alicia released her third studio album As I Am to positive reviews and it has since sold five million copies around the world. The album’s lead single “No One” helped Alicia further establish herself as a singing powerhouse, earning her Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 50th Grammy Awards.
Two years later, the star’s fourth album The Element of Freedom debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 417,000 copies and featured the 2011 Grammy-winning single “Empire State of Mind.”
In 2012, Alicia returned to the music scene with the release of her fifth album Girl on Fire and later performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XLVII.
Apart from her musical skills, Alicia made her first on-screen appearance in the TV series The Cosby Show (1985) prior to making her acting debut in the action drama Smokin’ Aces (2006). She has since co-starred in the dramedy The Nanny Diaries (2007) as well as the Academy Award-winning drama The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and is rumored to be starring in the action flick The Ninth Wave (2013).
