Never ever has there been a more sadly desperate story than an estranged relative trying to “reconnect” with their family members now that they’re famous.
Paralleling the likes of Michael Lohan, Mark Evans, the alienated father of hitmaker Adele, has long used his daughter for press. Here’s a timeline of his shenanigans…
January 2013: Evans is pleading for his long lost daughter to reconnect with him. As a last resort, he is trying to communicate to the songstress through the media.
He told the UK’s Daily Mail:
“I've left messages on her phone, I've written to her and I've sent her birthday and Christmas cards but it's like I'm dead to her. I'm not interested in her celebrity status or her money, I just want my daughter back and I want to be a proper granddad to the little one.”
Unfortunately, this is the same kind of behavior that forced Adele to cut him off to begin with.
October 2012: Adele announces that she and her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, have welcomed what we now know is her son, Angelo James. But, supposedly, Evans was the last to know that the singer was even pregnant.
“[Adele’s] mum rang and said, ‘Mark, I’ve got some important news for you. Adele is expecting a child,’” he previously complained to the Sunday Mirror. “My first reaction was a surge of happiness for her. But as we chatted about how Adele had told her in person, it dawned on me that my daughter hadn’t wanted to tell me herself.”
February 2012: Adele snubs Evans with no mention of him during her acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards.
“I just want to say, Mum, your girl did good!” she said of her mother, Penny Adkins, who raised her as a more-or-less single parent.
Nonetheless, Evans used the opportunity to further his “woe is me “sob story to the press.
“When she sings, it’s so beautiful … but it brings back too many memories,” he said.
March 2011: It was the interview that she would never forgive him for.
Evans spoke to the UK’s Sun where he admitted to being “a rotten father” who was never there for his daughter. He was a heavy drinker and “in the darkest place” of his life. Adele’s closest bond was instead with her grandfather.
“It’s time I got it off my chest. I’ve never talked to anyone about it before, not even my closest friends,” he said at the time.
The main message received: Mark Evans is an attention slut. Some things are better left unsaid…
