Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born May 5, 1988 in London, England. Her passion for music developed at a young age in part of being influenced by Mary J. Blige, Lauren Hill and Destiny’s Child.
Adele's true music awakening, however, appeared when she heard a collection of Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James records. Straying away from school, a subject she never really grasped, Adele made a three-track demo for a class assignment and even posted it on her MySpace page. The simple move caught the attention of the executives at XL Recordings who ultimately signed her to a record deal ensuing her high school graduation in November 2006.
In 2008, Adele released her debut album 19, named after her age at the time she started recording, which featured the hit tracks “Hometown Glory” and “Chasing Pavement.” Adele’s popularity quickly morphed over night and tripled in size when she put on an entertaining performance on Saturday Night Live in October 2008. Originally ranked at No. 40 on iTunes, her album quickly jumped to No. 1 minutes after the SNL taping. Adele’s triumphant progress continued to soar with her being crowned the BBC’s “Sound of 2008,” taking home the BRIT award for Critics’ Choice and winning the 2009 Grammy for Best New Artist
Adele’s second album 21, also named after her age when she began recording it, was released in 2011 and easily lived up to the public’s expectations. The album’s classic R&B and jazz sound infused with Adele’s raspy, soulful voice turned into a huge hit with first-week sales of over 352,000 copies. Her success was further amplified in result of the album’s commercially big hits “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You.”
In February of that same year, the rising icon had two top-five tracks and two top-five albums, making her the first artist to beat out the Beatles’ 1964 milestone. She went on to surpass the solo female artist record for holding the No.1 spot for eleven consecutive weeks before taking home six Grammy Awards in 2012, including Album of the Year.
Later that year, Adele began writing and recording the theme song for Skyfall, which she expressed as “one of the proudest moments of my life.” Her compassion behind the song and the public’s positive response was immediately evident when the single debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 with first-three day sales of 261,000 copies in the U.S., which has since increased to over two million worldwide. The hit theme went on to earn Adele her first Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 2013.
